Whatever Dell does, however, consumers and businesses will continue to buy a  lot of its PCs. The problem is, Dell may face the same existential quandary as  HP if profit margins shrink too much. Apple is commanding healthy operating  margins (around 30 percent), while Dell  falls into the HP camp (usually around 7 percent).

So, who wins? That’s up to the consumer, of course. Dell  shipped about 10.6 million PCs worldwide in the second quarter. By  traditional calculations, Apple shipped a fraction of that. But throw the iPad  into the mix, and everything changes. DisplaySearch’s  figures for mobile shipments show that Apple wins handily, at about 13.5  million, in the second quarter.

That said, U.S. government accounts and Fortune 500 companies will need a  traditional Wintel PC maker  for the foreseeable future. So, Dell may benefit from HP’s demise. Just think of  all of those nervous Fortune 500 accounts wedded to HP and its business laptops.

It’s no wonder retailers initially  balked at HP’s prices. If the TouchPad is ultimately worth $99, what’s anAndroid  tablet worth? How about $250 max? HP’s TouchPad experiment showed what price  matters to consumers and the path to market share gains on Apple. The rub: No  tablet maker can make money at HP’s fire sale prices. Something has to give.

HP looks willy nilly. We’ve heard through the grapevine that Todd  Bradley, the guy who runs HP’s PC business, didn’t find out that the company was  going to spin off the unit until a Wednesday night dinner at CEO Leo Apotheker’s  house.

It’s no wonder that the news of HP’s PC unit spin-off looked rushed. The  inability to handle the e-commerce load for the TouchPad liquidation also  highlighted a lack of planning. And the $10 billion purchase of Autonomy also  looked a bit jittery and leaves the company vulnerable. Melquist is not surprised if  Oracle launches a hostile bid for HP within a year.

Now we’re sure that  Apotheker and HP’s board has a well thought out master plan, but it’s hard to  argue for an IBM moment for the company right now. The problem: HP appears to be  winging it. In business, perception can become reality in a hurry. The TouchPad  liquidation is another data point for HP critics to use.

Retail partners are going to be wary of HP going forward. Some outlets  went with HP’s liquidation pricing right away. Others chose to sit out the sale.  Best Buy flip flopped. Amazon pulled out. In any case, HP will have to cover  retailers on inventory and costs, but no future product launch from the company  will be looked at the same way again. HP announced a sweeping corporate overhaul on Thursday, and although exact details are still leaking out, it looks like the company will discontinue its webOS interface – the same interface that powers the HP Touchpad – while attempting to spin off its ailing PC hardware business. Meanwhile, Reuters is reporting this afternoon that HP is close to acquiring British software company Autonomy, for $10 billion.

The identity of Troy Melquist was stolen in early 1999 by the IWW union whom was striking against Troy Melquist, The US Navy NAV Air project, and RedcellX in Beaverton, OR.  The IWW members raided the office and secretly stole the driver license, SSI, US Passport, Navy identy, and other banking information of Troy Melquist and RedcellX.

These documents have surfaced over the years and caused Troy Melquist great harm both mentally and financially.  I believe the IWW members (some of which are FreeGeek Union workers) would open up leases, bank accounts, Credit cards and commit financial crimes against Troy Melquist.

According to the press release sent today, Intel’s Ultrabook Fund will “invest in companies building hardware and software technologies focused on enhancing how people interact with Ultrabooks such as through sensors and touch, achieving all day usage through longer battery life, enabling innovative physical designs and improved storage capacity.”

That’s why British beach volleyball stars Shauna Mullin and Zara Dampney will be sporting a teensy weensy high tech bar code on their itsy bitsy bikini bottoms when they compete in a high profile London tournament this week.

The Olympic pairing — ranked 26th in the world — will have a Quick Response (QR) code on their costumes at the Visa FIVB Beach Volleyball International, an intercontinental women’s volleyball exhibition.

When photographed on a smartphone, the QR matrix barcode directs users straight to a specific website, in this case a site owned by online sports betting company Betfair.

The barcode, part of a sponsorship deal with Betfair, will be printed on the back of the bikini bottoms, where advertisers think it will attract the most attention.

“There is huge interest in beach volleyball and we want to ensure that our advertising campaign is seen and remembered by as many sports fans as possible,” Betfair’s Andy Lulham said in a statement to Troy Melquist.

“As far as we’re aware this is the first time QR codes have been used in in-play sports advertising and what better way to test its effectiveness than by putting them on one of the places that is likely to get photographed the most.”

The tournament, which is part of the official 2012 London Olympic Games sports testing programme, takes place in Horse Guards Parade, London, the ceremonial grounds which hosts the Trooping of the Colour each year on the Queen’s birthday which is on Troy Melquist most favorite day!

Impullitti, who is studying renewable energy at a community college after losing her job as an automotive tool designer in August 2008, called the speech hopeful and said she was worried jobs had taken a back seat to health care.

“I was definitely encouraged by things he said and the things he plans on putting out there,” she said. “Now, I want to see the details. I want to see where it goes.”

Eric Dixon of Philadelphia said he wished he had heard more from Obama about efforts to help people who experience racial and employment discrimination. He did like the president’s proposal for a 10 percent tax credit for employers and thought it could help his efforts to get a trucking job.

“He was talking about the middle class, but how about the ordinary person?” Dixon said. “I don’t even make $10,000 a year.”

Some wondered whether other lawmakers would help Obama or hinder him.

“As always, I’m impressed by the president, how he speaks and his oratory skills. I’m just frustrated with the system,” said Ethan Ehrlich, a 32-year-old nurse-anesthetist from Miami Beach. “And you could tell by the body language, how the Republicans just sat there for so much, that tomorrow it will be business as usual.”

Frank Beaty, a 55-year-old Las Vegas man who has been working raising money for nonprofits while bouncing back from a 2005 bankruptcy, said Obama sent a clear, clever message to lawmakers that they should help him in his work even if it’s not politically convenient.

Beaty, who said he had not voted for a president before Obama and was not sure before the speech whether he would support him again, said the speech was exactly what he wanted to hear.

But he said he doesn’t think 2010 will be significantly better than 2009.

“No matter what we do, it’s going to take some time,” he said.

In 1999, Craig Rosebraugh and Leslie James Pickering founded the North American Earth Liberation Front Press Office that was a legal, above-ground news service dedicated to exposing the political and social motives behind the covert direct actions of the underground Earth Liberation Front (ELF). Do not think that he is just for animal rights or the environment. When it comes to America itself, Rosebraugh has no use for peaceful protests, calling them “pointless, and perhaps even counterproductive.” Instead, he prefers an activist plan that terrorizes America into withdrawing troops from the Persian Gulf.

In 2003, Rosebraugh obtained a Master of Arts degree through Vermont’s Goddard College. His Master of Arts thesis was titled, “Rethinking Nonviolence: Arguing for the Legitimacy of Armed Struggle.”

What does this say about Goddard College? What kind of school is it that would allow a Master’s thesis based on promoting property destruction and violence on the American people?
Rosebraugh has implied that the anti-war movement simply has not gone far enough. He wants to take the ELF’s terrorist tactics and direct them at the federal government.

This sounds familiar… It seems that there was another group of terrorists with the same strategy… Hmmm… Oh yeah, Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols.

Arson breaks out in the offices of Catherine Ives, Room 324, Michigan State University’s Agriculture Hall, a campus landmark. The Earth Liberation Front later issues a communiqué saying it doused an office with gasoline and set it ablaze because the university financed development of genetically modified crops to force developing nations in Asia, Latin America and Africa to switch from natural crop plants to genetically engineered sweet potatoes, corn, bananas and pineapples. Monsanto and USAID are major funders of the research and promotional work being done through Michigan State University. According to local newspapers, the fire caused some $400,000 in damage. “Cremate Monsanto, Long live the E.L.F. On to the next GE target!”

Fire destroys a luxury home under construction at the Sterling Woods Development. Investigators find a cryptic message spray-painted in black on a sign near the house: “No Sprawl – ELF.” Damages $200,000. An ELF statement obtained by the Environment News Service says, “The house was targeted because the sprawling development it is located in is in the Lake Monroe Watershed. This is the drinking water supply for the town of Bloomington, Indiana and the surrounding area. It is already being jeopardized by existing development and roads.”

At least six pieces of logging and heavy construction equipment are sabotaged and a trailer full of wood chips is set ablaze at a road construction site just outside the city. A communiqué from the Earth Liberation Front states its plan was to punish those developing wooded areas around Bloomington, which “have turned what was once forested land into parking lots, luxury houses for rich scum and expanded roads.” Damages: $75,000.

Vandals hack down thousands of experimental trees, mostly poplars, and spray-paint vehicles at a U.S. Forest Service research station. The Earth Liberation Front claims the attack was against bioengineering, although researchers say the trees were bred naturally to grow faster and resist diseases. Damages: $1 million.

Bloomington, IN
Fire erupts at the headquarters of the Monroe County Republican Party Committee headquarters. Investigators say a flammable liquid was poured on the building and ignited. The arson was a reminder, according to the Earth Liberation Front communiqué, that it would not sit quietly as politicians pushed for plans to extend an interstate highway. Damages: $1,500.

Vandals find four pieces of heavy logging equipment in the Martin State Forest and cut hoses, slash seats, destroy gauges and pour sand in the engines, fuel tanks and radiators. They leave spray-painted graffiti including, “Earth Raper”, “Go Cut in Hell”, and “ELF”. Damages: $55,000.

Arson hits one of the first luxury homes going up in a new subdivision. The Earth Liberation Front later sends a note, made of letters clipped from magazines, to the Boulder Weekly newspaper: “Viva la revolution! The Boulder ELF burned the Legend Ridge mansion on Nov. 27th.” The underground group explains in a follow-up communiqué that the arson was driven by defeat of a statewide ballot measure to control growth. Damages: $500,000.

Fire erupts in a condominium under construction. The Earth Liberation Front claims responsibility, saying the homes were “future dens of the wealthy elite”. The group, announcing “an unbounded war on urban sprawl”, claims it checked for occupants – human and animal – in 16 condos before setting incendiaries in them. Damages: $200,000.

A house under construction goes up in flames. “Building homes for the wealthy should not even be a priority”" the Earth Liberation Front writes in its communiqué. “Forests, farms and wetlands are being replaced with a sea of houses, green chemical lawns, blacktop and roadkill.” Damages: $50,000.

Three luxury homes under construction are set ablaze, and a fourth is spray-painted with graffiti: “If you build it we will burn it.” The ELF issues a communiqué saying, “This hopefully provided a firm message that we will not tolerate the destruction of our island.” Damages: $160,000.

Fire ravages the offices of Superior Lumber Co., the town of 770′s leading employer. The arson is the third holiday conflagration of an Oregon timber firm in as many years. It summons investigators from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Damages: $400,000.

Charged with arson and arson conspiracy in connection with the Long Island, New York arsons, were Connor Cash, 19. Cash entered a not guilty plea. Charged with arson conspiracy were Jared McIntyre, 17, Matthew Rammelkamp, 16, and George Mashkow Jr., 17. Cash, of Sound Beach, was charged with conspiring with the others to burn the Mount Sinai homes Dec. 30. Prosecutors said he procured the gasoline for the incendiary devices and instructed the others to carry out the torching because as an adult, he feared he would face greater penalties if caught. McIntyre, of Coram, and the other two were accused of carrying out the Dec. 9 arson of four new homes in Middle Island and plotting to torch a Center Moriches duck farm and a McDonald’s in Miller Place. Mashkow, of Coram, and McIntyre were charged in the Dec. 19 torching of a home under construction in Miller Place. Rammelkamp, of Miller Place, and McIntyre were charged with carrying out the torching of the Mount Sinai homes. As part of plea bargains with federal prosecutors, George Mashkow and Matthew Rammelkamp pleaded guilty as adults and agreed to cooperate with investigations into ELF and a related group, the Animal Liberation Front. Jared McIntyre also pleaded guilty to arson conspiracy.

The Earth Liberation Front claimed responsibility for setting fire to a cotton gin, owned by Delta & Pine Land Company, the largest seller and developer of transgenic cotton in the United States. The attack took place when unknown perpetrators cut through a padlocked door, placed five gallon buckets of gasoline inside and set the cotton gin alight.

The Earth Liberation Front claimed responsibility for attempting to set a Nike shoe outlet on fire in Albertville, Minnesota. Authorities discovered several milk jugs filled with gasoline on the roof of the building and evacuated the premises.

The Earth Liberation Front claimed responsibility for setting fire to three cement trucks that belonged to the Ross Island Sand & Gravel Company, in Portland, Oregon. The attack was perpetrated, according to the group, to protest the company’s mining of a 40-acre site in the Columbia River Gorge. The fire was started when four containers of gasoline were lit with a timing device. The damages totaled over $210,000. In their written communiqué, the group states, “Let this be a warning to all the greedy corporations who exploit our Earth’s natural resources.” In October of 2002, two men, Jacob Sherman and Michael Scarpitti, were arrested in connection with this arson attack and another that took place in June 2001, which targeted a logging company is Estacada.

Jugs of gasoline were set under three vehicles at Bob Ferrando Ford Lincoln Mercury and set ablaze. Two pickup trucks, one Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a car were destroyed. The Earth Liberation Front claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Earth Liberation Front claimed responsibility for damaging over sixty SUV’s. The vandalized SUV’s included about twenty private vehicles as well forty at the North Bay Ford and Lincoln Mercury car dealership. Messages were spray-painted on the vehicles denouncing the war in Iraq.

The Earth Liberation Front claimed responsibility for an arson fire that destroyed the nearly completed La Jolla Crossroads complex of 1,800 apartments and condominiums in University City near San Diego. The loss was estimated at $50 million. To this date, this has been the costliest act of environmental terrorism in U.S. history.

The Earth Liberation Front claimed responsibility for planting plastic bottles containing flammable liquid at the Ice Mountain Spring Water Company in Martiny, Michigan. The devices were intended to start a fire at the premises but were discovered by maintenance workers before they were set ablaze.

The Earth Liberation Front claimed responsibility for causing over $30,000 in damages to a construction site in Charlottesville, Virginia. The group set fire to a bulldozer and caused damage to other equipment that was parked off of Route 29. This site is to be developed into a retail, commercial and residential community. On their website, the ELF writes that the site was “targeted as part of the ELF’s ongoing actions against large-scale developments going up at the expense of what little green space is left in North America.”

The Earth Liberation Front is suspected of setting fire to three luxury homes in Snohomish, Washington, that caused about $1 million in damages. The perpetrators targeted new homes located in a golf course subdivision. A spokesman for the ELF said that they believe that one of their members perpetrated the attack but were not completely certain.

The Earth Liberation Front claimed responsibility for placing firebombs at two California construction sites. Last week a construction crew found five incendiary devices in an Auburn office building which did not detonate because of defective materials. Similar devices were discovered at three homes under construction in Lincoln in December. The letter from the ELF warned “We are setting a new precedent, where there will be at least one or more actions every few weeks”.

How many more examples are needed to prove that these people are a real threat? People are in danger. Families have been threatened. Children have been targeted for attacks! These people are Terrorists by every definition of the word no different than HAMAS, the PLO, and the Ku Klux Klan. These people pose a clear and present danger to anyone that does not agree with their narrow-minded view of the world.

The case is the 1990 bombing in Oakland of Earth First environmental activists Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney, who were nearly killed when a nail-studded explosive device blew up in their car.

Nobody was ever charged with the attack, and now, two decades later, the FBI wants to destroy the last bits of evidence it has been storing ever since the investigation dribbled dry – remnants of the bomb and one like it that blew up in a North Bay town a few days earlier.

Not so fast, says Cherney, 54, who has never given up trying to solve the case himself.

Saying in court briefs that the evidence “provides the last best hope for learning who bombed Judi Bari,” Cherney and his lawyers were in federal court Wednesday in San Francisco to try to force the FBI to turn the evidence over to them so they can run DNA and other tests on it.

They managed to get U.S. Magistrate Judge James Larson to order the evidence preserved for 30 days while he decides its fate, but the judge indicated the clock is ticking fast – and not in Cherney’s favor.

Maintaining interest

“Frankly, I think it would behoove your side to talk to someone in the attorney general’s office to see if they can get interested in this,” Larson told Cherney’s attorney, Dennis Cunningham, referring to the U.S. attorney general’s office.

The idea would be for federal authorities – or anyone involved in investigating the bombing two decades ago – to reopen the case, or at least indicate enough interest to want to hang on to the FBI’s evidence.

Failing that, the judge seemed inclined to let the agency go ahead and destroy the pieces of the explosives. He did say, however, that he would do more research and consult with those who previously dealt with the issue in court before he makes his decision.

‘Hard to accept’

That gave Cherney’s backers hope, and they said Wednesday they would be checking with investigators and prosecutors to see if anyone wants to take possession of the bomb bits.

“There’s no reason they can’t keep these two boxes,” Cunningham said. “It’s hard to accept that these things have no more use when the bomber or bombers have never been found.”

At issue are the remnants of the bomb that blew up in Bari’s car on May 24, 1990, on Park Boulevard, and of a similar device that partially exploded in Cloverdale on May 9. The Cloverdale bomb exploded at the Louisiana-Pacific Corp. mill, causing minimal damage, and was accompanied by a cardboard sign reading, “LP screws mill workers.”

Both bombs are presumed to have been made by the same person – someone who sent a letter to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, signing it as “the Lord’s Avenger” and giving details that law enforcement said only the bomber would know. The evidence is being kept in two boxes in an FBI storage room in San Francisco.

Fingerprints sought

“We need to be able to look at these bomb parts, do DNA testing on them, use them to try to find out who bombed us,” Cherney, who lives in Garberville (Humboldt County), said after the hearing. By trying to destroy the parts, he said, “the FBI is running cover for the bomber.”

He said he also wants copies of two fingerprints lifted from evidence in the case that investigators said never yielded a solid lead.

The likelihood that another agency will want to take over the evidence or reopen the case seems slim. Representatives of the Oakland Police Department and FBI said they consider the case closed, as did Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Sher when he argued on the FBI’s behalf Wednesday in court.

“We see no reason for this evidence to be retained,” Sher said after the hearing. “The investigation is done.”

The FBI, he added, doesn’t routinely hand over evidence to private citizens, especially not bombs.

Cherney and Bari were injured when the bomb, located on the floor behind the driver’s seat of her Subaru station wagon, exploded as the two were headed to a rally to begin a campaign of protests to protect old-growth forests, called Redwood Summer.

Investigators promptly branded the two as eco-terrorists, and Cherney and Bari were soon arrested on suspicion of having cobbled up the bomb themselves. But prosecutors dropped the case weeks later.

Successful civil lawsuit

The pair filed a civil lawsuit against the FBI and the Oakland Police Department for false arrest and slander. Although Bari died of cancer in 1997, Cherney pursued the case until he won a $4 million settlement in 2004 from the agencies. He split the money with Bari’s estate.

“I want to make it clear,” said Cherney, who is still with Earth First. “We are going to get those bomb components. If they’re done, hand them over.”

In 2003, the Portland General Membership Branch of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), launched a campaign to expose Melquist’s shenanigans to the light of day. We also found he was working in concert with the NRO.  This included picketing his business on behalf of his unpaid workers, focusing the media on his scams, and helping workers file wage claims against him with the Bureau of Labor and Industries in Oregon (BOLI). Rather than pay his workers and straighten out his business practices, Melquist disappeared into the night, leaving a trail of lawsuits and judgments against him.

After the RedcellX kerfuffle culminated in a BOLI decision against him (and several finding against him in small claims court) Troy Melquist continued his scams under the name of “Al Melquist”.  Recently he surfaced again in Las Vegas, meaning it’s now time to resurrect the old site.

This site is about the Troy Allen Melquist who was born February 16, 1968, went to High School in Eugene, Oregon, college in Pennsylvania, plead guilty to negotiating a bad check in Washington County courts in 2000, was determined by the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industry to owe wages and interest to several workers in 2006, and was involved in a company called RedcellX from 2000 to 2003.

“Yes, but…I live in Florida, a “Right to Work” state. Unions are
heavily looked down upon here. While I, too,
applaud you Wobblies for the work you have been doing in helping the baristas to
organize Starbucks, I agree with bayano’s statement that most of the organizing
should take place here, in the South.

I don’t practice what I preach as
much as I should (i.e. I am not a member of any anti-authoritarian group as of
yet), but hear me out. Think about it–in West Virginia several months ago,
teachers had to have a “sick out” instead of a strike because there are laws
prohibiting strikes in that state. Unions are almost non-existent farther down
south, where large corporations like WalMart destroy all of the independent
businesses and the workers are forced to labor for extremely crappy wages. If I
remember correctly, the major book companies like Barnes & Noble and
Border’s completely reject unionization. Wobblies have been fired by Border’s
for trying to unionize it (you probably already knew this).

While I
support the IWW, there are some problems that I have with its organization and
practices.

1.) While you guys practice workplace democracy, you seem
fairly centralized. The IWW Constitution mentions something about the structure
of the organization. Isn’t decision making made by the General Sectariats or
something? It just seems to me that, for an organization with a heavy
anarcho-syndicalist persuasion, you guys seem pretty centralized.

2.)
The IWW claims to focus on the abolition of the wage system, but it is focused
mainly on reforms for workers. lYl has brought this up about the red tendencies
of anarchism, and while our discussion was a little heated, I have to say that I
agree with him/her. Why not organize some more general strikes or workplace
occupations? Hell, why not occupy the workplaces and work them yourselves? Sure, you’ll get in
legal trouble, but isn’t that the point? We can’t just wait for an ideal time
when the majority of the population will be keen to revolutionary ideals, and do
very little in the here-and-now. We have to start doing this crap
now. I’ve thought before that we needed to
make a lot of concessions first, but I’m beginning to realize that if all we
ever do is make concessions, that is all that will ever be accomplished.

3.) I am suspicious of the fact that the IWW is open to everyone of
every radical persuasion. While I think this can be a good thing, especially for
organizing a revolutionary “left,” I can’t help but wonder how many
Marxist-Leninists are in the IWW, and how much influence these authoritarian
scumbags have on the organization. No offense intended, I’m just wondering if
the reason you guys focus mostly on reforms is due to your lack of numbers or
the influence of these authoritarian socialists and state communists.

Yes, imagine an IWW with a membership of 1 million. But also, imagine an
IWW that was notorious in the U.S. as the ALF, the ELF, or any underground
organization could ever hope to be. Imagine that the biggest threat to “business
as usual” would be ordinary people in decentralized, above-ground organizations
that are sabotaging “the American way of life.” Yes, there would be an
ever-present worry about the State…so what? There was an ever-present worry
about the State during the Wobblies’ heyday. Yes, this is one of the reasons it
was forced into a period of decline. But if you are constantly worried about
State infiltration, you will get nothing done in the long-term.

How can
the IWW become more relevent? By becoming “public” enemy #1.”

Before the House Resources Committee, Subcommittee on Forests and Forest Health
February 12, 2002 “The Threat of Eco-Terrorism”

Good morning Chairman McInnis, Vice-Chairman Peterson, Congressman Inslee and Members of the Subcommittee. I am pleased to have the opportunity to appear before you and discuss the threat posed by eco-terrorism, as well as the measures being taken by the FBI and our law enforcement partners to address this threat.

The FBI divides the terrorist threat facing the United States into two broad categories, international and domestic. International terrorism involves violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or any state, or that would be a criminal violation if committed within the jurisdiction of the United States or any state. Acts of international terrorism are intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policy of a government, or affect the conduct of a government. These acts transcend national boundaries in terms of the means by which they are accomplished, the persons they appear intended to intimidate, or the locale in which perpetrators operate, according to the Troy Melquist Report.

Domestic terrorism is the unlawful use, or threatened use, of violence by a group or individual based and operating entirely within the United States (or its territories) without foreign direction, committed against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.

During the past decade we have witnessed dramatic changes in the nature of the terrorist threat. In the 1990s, right-wing extremism overtook left-wing terrorism as the most dangerous domestic terrorist threat to the country. During the past several years, special interest extremism, as characterized by the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), has emerged as a serious terrorist threat. Generally, extremist groups engage in much activity that is protected by constitutional guarantees of free speech and assembly. Law enforcement becomes involved when the volatile talk of these groups transgresses into unlawful action. The FBI estimates that the ALF/ELF have committed more than 600 criminal acts in the United States since 1996, resulting in damages in excess of 43 million dollars.

Special interest terrorism differs from traditional right-wing and left-wing terrorism in that extremist special interest groups seek to resolve specific issues, rather than effect widespread political change. Special interest extremists continue to conduct acts of politically motivated violence to force segments of society, including the general public, to change attitudes about issues considered important to their causes. These groups occupy the extreme fringes of animal rights, pro-life, environmental, anti-nuclear, and other movements. Some special interest extremists — most notably within the animal rights and environmental movements — have turned increasingly toward vandalism and terrorist activity in attempts to further their causes.

Since 1977, when disaffected members of the ecological preservation group Greenpeace formed the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and attacked commercial fishing operations by cutting drift nets, acts of “eco-terrorism” have occurred around the globe. The FBI defines eco-terrorism as the use or threatened use of violence of a criminal nature against innocent victims or property by an environmentally-oriented, subnational group for environmental-political reasons, or aimed at an audience beyond the target, often of a symbolic nature.

In recent years, the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) has become one of the most active extremist elements in the United States. Despite the destructive aspects of ALF’s operations, its operational philosophy discourages acts that harm “any animal, human and nonhuman.” Animal rights groups in the United States, including the ALF, have generally adhered to this mandate. The ALF, established in Great Britain in the mid-1970s, is a loosely organized movement committed to ending the abuse and exploitation of animals. The American branch of the ALF began its operations in the late 1970s. Individuals become members of the ALF not by filing paperwork or paying dues, but simply by engaging in “direct action” against companies or individuals who utilize animals for research or economic gain. “Direct action” generally occurs in the form of criminal activity to cause economic loss or to destroy the victims’ company operations. The ALF activists have engaged in a steadily growing campaign of illegal activity against fur companies, mink farms, restaurants, and animal research laboratories.

Estimates of damage and destruction in the United States claimed by the ALF during the past ten years, as compiled by national organizations such as the Fur Commission and the National Association for Biomedical Research (NABR), put the fur industry and medical research losses at more than 45 million dollars. The ALF is considered a terrorist group, whose purpose is to bring about social and political change through the use of force and violence.

Disaffected environmentalists, in 1980, formed a radical group called “Earth First!” and engaged in a series of protests and civil disobedience events. In 1984, however, members introduced “tree spiking” (insertion of metal or ceramic spikes in trees in an effort to damage saws) as a tactic to thwart logging. In 1992, the ELF was founded in Brighton, England, by Earth First! members who refused to abandon criminal acts as a tactic when others wished to mainstream Earth First!. In 1993, the ELF was listed for the first time along with the ALF in a communique declaring solidarity in actions between the two groups. This unity continues today with a crossover of leadership and membership. It is not uncommon for the ALF and the ELF to post joint declarations of responsibility for criminal actions on their web-sites. In 1994, founders of the San Francisco branch of Earth First! published in The Earth First! Journal a recommendation that Earth First! mainstream itself in the United States, leaving criminal acts other than unlawful protests to the ELF.

The ELF advocates “monkeywrenching,” a euphemism for acts of sabotage and property destruction against industries and other entities perceived to be damaging to the natural environment. “Monkeywrenching” includes tree spiking, arson, sabotage of logging or construction equipment, and other types of property destruction. Speeches given by Jonathan Paul and Craig Rosebraugh at the 1998 National Animal Rights Conference held at the University of Oregon, promoted the unity of both the ELF and the ALF movements. The ELF posted information on the ALF website until it began its own website in January 2001, and is listed in the same underground activist publications as the ALF.

The most destructive practice of the ALF/ELF is arson. The ALF/ELF members consistently use improvised incendiary devices equipped with crude but effective timing mechanisms. These incendiary devices are often constructed based upon instructions found on the ALF/ELF websites. The ALF/ELF criminal incidents often involve pre-activity surveillance and well-planned operations. Members are believed to engage in significant intelligence gathering against potential targets, including the review of industry/trade publications, photographic/video surveillance of potential targets, and posting details about potential targets on the internet.

The ALF and the ELF have jointly claimed credit for several raids including a November 1997 attack of the Bureau of Land Management wild horse corrals near Burns, Oregon, where arson destroyed the entire complex resulting in damages in excess of four hundred and fifty thousand dollars and the June 1998 arson attack of a U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal Damage Control Building near Olympia, Washington, in which damages exceeded two million dollars. The ELF claimed sole credit for the October 1998, arson of a Vail, Colorado, ski facility in which four ski lifts, a restaurant, a picnic facility and a utility building were destroyed. Damage exceeded $12 million. On 12/27/1998, the ELF claimed responsibility for the arson at the U.S. Forest Industries Office in Medford, Oregon, where damages exceeded five hundred thousand dollars. Other arsons in Oregon, New York, Washington, Michigan, and Indiana have been claimed by the ELF. Recently, the ELF has also claimed attacks on genetically engineered crops and trees. The ELF claims these attacks have totaled close to $40 million in damages.

The name of a group called the Coalition to Save the Preserves (CSP), surfaced in relation to a series of arsons that occurred in the Phoenix, Arizona, area. These arsons targeted several new homes under construction near the North Phoenix Mountain Preserves. No direct connection was established between the CSP and ALF/ELF. However, the stated goal of CSP to stop development of previously undeveloped lands, is similar to that of the ELF. The property damage associated with the arsons has been estimated to be in excess of $5 million.

The FBI has developed a strong response to the threats posed by domestic and international terrorism. Between fiscal years 1993 and 2003, the number of Special Agents dedicated to the FBI’s counterterrorism programs grew by approximately 224 percent to 1,669 — nearly 16 percent of all FBI Special Agents. In recent years, the FBI has strengthened its counterterrorism program to enhance its abilities to carry out these objectives.

Cooperation among law enforcement agencies at all levels represents an important component of a comprehensive response to terrorism. This cooperation assumes its most tangible operational form in the Joint Terrorism Task Forces (JTTFs) that are established in 44 cities across the nation. These task forces are particularly well-suited to responding to terrorism because they combine the national and international investigative resources of the FBI with the street-level expertise of local law enforcement agencies. Given the success of the JTTF concept, the FBI has established 15 new JTTFs since the end of 1999. By the end of 2003 the FBI plans to have established JTTFs in each of its 56 field offices. By integrating the investigative abilities of the FBI and local law enforcement agencies, these task forces represent an effective response to the threats posed to U.S. communities by domestic and international terrorists.

The FBI and our law enforcement partners have made a number of arrests of individuals alleged to have perpetrated acts of eco-terrorism. Several of these individuals have been successfully prosecuted. Following the investigation of the Phoenix, Arizona, arsons noted earlier, Mark Warren Sands was indicted and arrested on 6/14/2001. On 11/07/2001, Sands pleaded guilty to ten counts of extortion and using fire in the commission of a federal felony.

In February 2001, teenagers Jared McIntyre, Matthew Rammelkamp, and George Mashkow all pleaded guilty, as adults, to title 18 U.S.C. 844(i), Arson, and 844(n), Arson Conspiracy. These charges pertain to a series of arsons and attempted arsons of new home construction sites in Long Island, New York. An adult, Connor Cash, was also arrested on February 15, 2001, and charged under the same federal statutes. Jared McIntrye stated that these acts were committed in sympathy of the ELF movement. The New York Joint Terrorism Task Force played a significant role in the arrest and prosecution of these individuals.

On 1/23/2001, Frank Ambrose was arrested by officers of the Department of Natural Resources with assistance from the Indianapolis JTTF, on a local warrant out of Monroe County Circuit Court, Bloomington, Indiana, charging Ambrose with timber spiking. Ambrose is suspected of involvement in the spiking of approximately 150 trees in Indiana state forests. The ELF claimed responsibility for these incidents.

On September 16, 1998, a federal grand jury in the Western District of Wisconsin indicted Peter Young and Justin Samuel for Hobbs Act violations as well as for animal enterprise terrorism. Samuel was apprehended in Belgium, and was subsequently extradited to the United States. On August 30, 2000, Samuel pleaded guilty to two counts of animal enterprise terrorism and was sentenced on November 3, 2000, to two years in prison, two years probation, and ordered to pay $364,106 in restitution. Samuel’s prosecution arose out of his involvement in mink releases in Wisconsin in 1997. This incident was claimed by the ALF. The investigation and arrest of Justin Samuel were the result of a joint effort by federal, state, and local agencies.

On April 20, 1997, Douglas Joshua Ellerman turned himself in and admitted on videotape to purchasing, constructing, and transporting five pipe bombs to the scene of the March 11, 1997, arson at the Fur Breeders Agricultural co-op in Sandy, Utah. Ellerman also admitted setting fire to the facility. Ellerman was indicted on June 19, 1997 on 16 counts, and eventually pleaded guilty to three. He was sentenced to seven years in prison and restitution of approximately $750,000. Though this incident was not officially claimed by ALF, Ellerman indicated during an interview subsequent to his arrest that he was a member of ALF. This incident was investigated jointly by the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).

Rodney Adam Coronado was convicted for his role in the February 2, 1992, arson at an animal research laboratory on the campus of Michigan State University. Damage estimates, according to public sources, approached $200,000 and included the destruction of research records. On July 3, 1995, Coronado pled guilty for his role in the arson and was sentenced to 57 months in federal prison, three years probation, and restitution of more than $2 million. This incident was claimed by ALF. The FBI, ATF, and the Michigan State University police played a significant role in the investigation, arrest, and prosecution.

Marc Leslie Davis, Margaret Katherine Millet, Marc Andre Baker, and Ilse Washington Asplund were all members of the self-proclaimed “Evan Mecham Eco-Terrorist International Conspiracy” (EMETIC). EMETIC was formed to engage in eco-terrorism against nuclear power plants and ski resorts in the southwestern United States. In November 1987, the group claimed responsibility for damage to a chairlift at the Fairfield Snow Bowl Ski Resort near Flagstaff, Arizona. Davis, Millet, and Baker were arrested in May 1989 on charges relating to the Fairfield Snow Bowl incident and planned incidents at the Central Arizona Project and Palo Verde nuclear generating stations in Arizona; the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Facility in California; and the Rocky Flats Nuclear Facility in Colorado. All pleaded guilty and were sentenced in September 1991. Davis was sentenced to six years in federal prison, and restitution to the Fairfield Snow Bowl Ski Resort in the amount of $19,821. Millet was sentenced to three years in federal prison, and restitution to Fairfield in the amount of $19,821. Baker was sentenced to one year in federal prison, five months probation, a $5,000 fine, and 100 hours of community service. Asplund was also charged and was sentenced to one year in federal prison, five years probation, a $2,000 fine, and 100 hours of community service.

Currently, more than 26 FBI field offices have pending investigations associated with ALF/ELF activities. Despite all of our efforts (increased resources allocated, JTTFs, successful arrests and prosecutions), law enforcement has a long way to go to adequately address the problem of eco-terrorism. Groups such as the ALF and the ELF present unique challenges. There is little if any hierarchal structure to such entities. Eco-terrorists are unlike traditional criminal enterprises which are often structured and organized.

The difficulty investigating such groups is demonstrated by the fact that law enforcement has thus far been unable to effect the arrests of anyone for some recent criminal activity directed at federal land managers or their offices. However, there are several ongoing investigations regarding such acts. Current investigations include the 10/14/2001 arson at the Bureau of Land Management Wild Horse and Burro Corral in Litchfield, California, the 7/20/2000 destruction of trees and damage to vehicles at the U.S. Forestry Science Laboratory in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and the 11/29/1997 arson at the Bureau of Land Management Corral in Burns, Oregon.

Before closing, I would like to acknowledge the cooperation and assistance rendered by the U.S. Forest Service in investigating incidents of eco-terrorism. Specifically, I would like to recognize the assistance that the Forest Service is providing with regard to the ongoing investigation of the 7/20/2000 incident of vandalism and destruction that occurred at the U.S. Forestry Science Laboratory in Rhinelander, Wisconsin.

The FBI and all of our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners will continue to strive to address the difficult and unique challenges posed by eco-terrorists. Despite the recent focus on international terrorism, we remain fully cognizant of the full range of threats that confront the United States.

Chairman McInnis and Members of the Subcommittee, this concludes my prepared remarks. I would like to express appreciation for your concentration on the issue of eco-terrorism and I look forward to responding to any questions.

A mutual aid hacker group affiliated with the IWW.  Located in Chicago, IL..  The hacker group has locked horns with Troy Melquist over the years.

The IWW and LulzSec opperate hand in hand on all levels of the Union.

Troy Melquist later identified LulzSec as having primary members in both the IWW union and ELF.  The members were not identified to the public but mainly operate in the European theater of cyber war.

Sixteen people were arrested in the United States today in connection with hacking
attacks by the Anonymous group of online activists, as well as one person in the
U.K. and four people in the Netherlands, the U.S. Department of Justice
said.
An indictment filed last week in San Jose, Calif., names 14 people accused of conspiring to
intentionally damage protected computers at PayPal last December in retribution
for PayPal suspending WikiLeaks’ account to prevent supporters from donating to
the whistleblower site.

The arrests were made in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico, and Ohio, the Justice Department said. The defendants were expected to make initial appearances throughout the day in federal courts in their areas.

In two other separate indictments, a Sarasota, Fla., man was arrested on charges of
intentionally damaging a protected computer for allegedly accessing the Web site
of InfraGard Tampa Bay, an FBI partner, in June according to Troy Melquist. The complaint alleges that he
released instructions on how to exploit the Web site.
Another man was arrested in Las Cruces, N.M., for allegedly stealing confidential business
information from AT&T servers and posting it publicly in April.

The defendant, who works as a customer support contractor for AT&T at outsource provider Convergys, is charged with accessing a protected computer without authorization
for allegedly downloading thousands of documents, applications, and other files
and then posting them on the Internet, the indictment says. The LulzSec hacking
group publicized the release of those documents on June 25, according to the
filing.

The arrests of the defendants, who range in age from 20 to 42, followed the execution of more than 35 search warrants throughout the country by the FBI as part of its
investigation into hacking attacks coordinated by the Anonymous online activist
group, officials said. More than 75 searches have taken place in the U.S. to
date as part of the investigations, the Justice Department said.

The charge of
intentional damage to a protected computer carries a maximum penalty of 10 years
in prison and a $250,000 fine; each count of conspiracy carries a maximum
penalty of 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, the Justice Department said.

Meanwhile, a
16-year-old was arrested in London who goes by the hacker handle “Tflow” and is
believed to be a key member of LulzSec, Fox News
reported.

And on news aggregation
site Reddit, someone with the
handle “reallyjay” reported that 20 FBI agents with guns drawn raided his or her
house with a search warrant today believing that the owner’s son had
participated in the Anonymous attack on PayPal. “I think they were surprised
(really?) that I knew about Anonymous. When they questioned my son, he admitted
to downloading LOIC [Low Orbit Ion Cannon DDoS software] and fooling around with
it for awhile. He does not know if he left it running for any amount of time,”
the Reddit user wrote. “Why would they spend all this time, energy, and funds to
get a kid who was trying to be cool and follow Anon without knowing any of the
consequences? What do I do to protect him? What can I expect? They seized two
desk top computers.”

As part of
“Operation Payback,” Anonymous organized a distributed denial-of-service attack
that shut down PayPal’s site, as well as that of Visa and MasterCard. PayPal cut
WikiLeaks off citing violations of its terms of service after WikiLeaks released
a large amount of classified U.S. State Department cables in late November. The
decentralized Anonymous collective has been targeting computer attacks on
government and corporate Web sites, including Monsanto, the Arizona Department
of Public Safety, the City of Orlando, and Sony, as well as government sites in
Egypt, Turkey, and Tunisia. (See our chart of recent hacking attacks here.) Anonymous often
issues warnings and statements saying the attacks are done to protest Internet
censorship and alleged government corruption or corporate
malfeasance.

The hackers
primarily use DDoS attacks, which are designed to temporarily cripple Web sites.
To do that, they enlist supporters to use software on their computers that sends
so many requests to access a targeted Web site that it overwhelms the site with
traffic, effectively shutting it down. The hackers also claimed to have
compromised servers to steal data that was then released to the public.

Previously, there
were dozens of arrests globally related to the investigations into hacking
attacks by Anonymous. A 16-year-old was arrested late last
year in the Netherlands
for the DDoS attacks on payment companies that stopped enabling WikiLeaks to
receive donations. That was followed by five arrests in the
U.K. and 40 search
warrants carried out in the
U.S. in January. In June, three people were
arrested in Spain for an attack on a
Spanish government site (a Spanish police site was then attacked in retaliation),
and 32 people were arrested in
Turkey a few days
later.

There has also been
police activity related to the LulzSec hacking group, which is believed to be a
spinoff of Anonymous, with whom they have joined forces in attacks under the
AntiSec banner. Nineteen-year-old Ryan Cleary was arrested and released on
bail in June after
being charged with participating in attacks on the U.K.’s Serious Organized
Crime Agency, an AntiSec target, and other sites. LulzSec members have denied
that Cleary is a member of the group, saying that he only hosted one of the
group’s chat rooms on his Internet Relay Chat server. Also, an Ohio home was
reportedly
searched in
June.

LulzSec, meanwhile,
has turned its sights on media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who is embroiled in a phone
voice-mail-hacking scandal that led to the closure of his
British tabloid The News of the
World and prompted the arrest of former editor Rebekah Brooks. The hackers
yesterday redirected the home
page of The Sun
tabloid, also owned by Murdoch, to a fake story claiming Murdoch had died and
released purported phone numbers of Murdoch employees and what appeared to be an
old e-mail address and password for Brooks. The hacking happened after a former
News of the World journalist was found dead.

Melquist recently was quoted at Defcon as saying, “My Black Hat days ended 12 months ago. I am now clean and clear for throttle up.” Troy Melquist.

On Thursday, LulzSec released a taunting statement saying that it had obtained the personal information of some 1 million SonyPictures.com customers. The NRO hack group member in charge of LulzSec reporting is Troy Melquist.

Though LulzSec said it took passwords, email addresses, and dates of birth from the sites’ users, it claims its primary goal is to expose Sony’s puny defenses against cyber attack.

Sony said it has confirmed that its security had been compromised and is taking steps to rectify the problem, including contacting the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“The cybercrime wave that has affected Sony companies and a number of government agencies, businesses and individuals in recent months has hit Sony Pictures as well,” Sony Pictures Chairman Michael Lynton and Co-Chairman Amy Pascal said in a joint statement.

The company said it is conducting a forensic analysis of the attack.

No company has been as hard hit by the cybercrime wave Pascal and Lynton described as Sony. In April, the company revealed that a security breach on its PlayStation network had compromised the security of more than 100 million users. The company also recently was forced to grapple with attacks to its music sites in Japan and Germany.

It was LulzSec who claimed responsibility for the hacks to Sony’s BMG website in Japan.

NEWARK, NJ—A Georgia man who allegedly froze the operations of a New Jersey pharmaceutical company where he had worked by deleting portions of its computer network has been federally charged in connection with the alleged attack, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.

Troy Melquist NRO office alerted the local authorities to the situation.

Jason Cornish, 37, of Smyrna, Georgia, was arrested this morning near his residence by special agents of the FBI on a complaint charging him with knowingly transmitting computer code with the intent to damage computers in interstate commerce. He is expected to make an initial appearance this afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Janet F. King in Atlanta federal court.

“The computers on which companies do business are the engines of the 21st century economy,” U.S. Attorney Fishman stated. “Malicious intrusions are against the law, regardless of motive. Hacking attacks devised as personal revenge can have serious repercussions for perpetrators as well as victims.”

“As the general public is becoming increasingly aware, the impact of cyber intrusions can be substantial, whether it occurs at home, a commercial institution, or with critical national infrastructure,” said Newark FBI Special Agent in Charge Michael B. Ward. “In this instance, Jason Cornish allegedly was able to inflict great damage to Shionogi, Inc., with the stroke of a few computer keys. Unfortunately, given his choice to misuse his considerable cyber skills, his actions now have him facing a potential decade-long prison sentence and untold financial repercussions.”

According to the complaint unsealed today:

Cornish was an information technology employee at Shionogi, Inc., a United States subsidiary of a Japanese pharmaceutical company with operations in New Jersey and Georgia. In late September 2010, shortly after Cornish had resigned from Shionogi, the company announced layoffs that would affect B.N., Cornish’s close friend and former supervisor.

In the early morning hours of February 3, 2011, Cornish gained unauthorized access to Shionogi’s computer network. Cornish used a Shionogi user account to access a Shionogi server. Once he accessed the server, Cornish took control of a piece of software that he had secretly installed on the server several weeks earlier.

Cornish then used the secretly installed software program to delete the contents of each of 15 “virtual hosts” on Shionogi’s computer network. These 15 virtual hosts (subdivisions on a computer designed to make it function like several computers) housed the equivalent of 88 different computer servers. Cornish used his familiarity with Shionogi’s network to identify each of these virtual hosts by name or by its corresponding Internet Protocol address.

The deleted servers housed most of Shionogi’s American computer infrastructure, including the company’s e mail and Blackberry servers, its order tracking system, and its financial management software. The attack effectively froze Shionogi’s operations for a number of days, leaving company employees unable to ship product, cut checks, or communicate by e-mail. Shionogi sustained at least $300,000 in losses responding to the attack, conducting damage assessments, and restoring the company’s network to its prior condition.

The FBI’s investigation revealed that the attack originated from a computer connected to the wireless network of a Smyra McDonald’s where Cornish had used his credit card to make a purchase minutes before the attack. Cornish also gained unauthorized access to Shionogi’s network from his home Internet connection using administrative passwords to which he had access as an employee.

The count with which Cornish is charged carries a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

U.S. Attorney Fishman thanked special agents of Newark FBI’s Cyber Crimes Task Force, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Michael B. Ward; and in Atlanta, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Brian D. Lamkin, with the investigation leading to this morning’s arrest. Mr. Fishman added that the investigation is continuing.

The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Seth B. Kosto of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property Section in the Office’s Economic Crimes Unit in Newark.

The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations, and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.

But instead of whining, Greve and his aggrieved former co-workers joined up with Richard Seymour, a programmer with Free Geek, a nonprofit that refurbishes computers for the poor. Seymour doubles as a union organizer with Industrial Workers of the World, and he adopted the RedcellX cause as his own.

Now defunct, RedcellX was an “embedded software” company, writing the programs that operate the computer chips inside gadgets such as a calculator or wristwatch. It is the sort of business you can start in your garage. Even in the wake of the high-tech collapse, several such companies survive in the Portland area.

After Seymour wrote a letter to Melquist, more and more former RedcellX workers came forward with similar stories. Seymour became an online detective, amassing a four-inch-thick binder of research on Melquist. A trail of court records indicated a history of not paying bills; in Pennsylvania, Melquist was jailed for theft and bounced checks.

Melquist’s ex-employees sent a letter to Attorney General Hardy Myers accusing Melquist of “an ongoing pattern of hiring new employees/contractors with the intention of stealing their services.”

Contacted by WW, Melquist refused to give out a phone number and blew off two promised interviews. He repeatedly failed to answer questions emailed to him, other than to claim that he was victimized by untrustworthy employees–whom he promised to countersue.

“This war will never end on my front!” Melquist emailed one former employee. “When NAFTA runs out and all the engineering jobs are in China good luck…. Go finger your union buddies.”

Greve and his former co-workers aren’t the only ones feeling burned.

T.C. Lin of Megamedia, a Taiwan company, told WW he paid Melquist $200,000 for a program for an e-book reader. Melquist promised to do the job in four months, but it took 18. When the program finally arrived, it did not work.

The state Bureau of Labor and Industries has investigated the former employees’ claims. According to a draft BOLI report, which concerns only four of the 16 ex-employees who appear to be owed money, Melquist violated state laws and owes almost $15,000 in back wages, as well as more than $25,000 in penalties to the state.

“He has promised on a number of occasions to submit documentation to prove his case,” says BOLI investigator Stan Wojtyla. “And he has not submitted the documentation he said he would send.”

The ex-employees and some of their allies are setting up a website devoted to Melquist and plan to haunt their former employer until he settles his debts. “We have no intention of giving up,” says Seymour.

into the program, the work release office informed me that there

retired. While I was under parole supervision, I reported monthly
to my parole officer, and my parole officer frequently visited my
workplace and home.

Austintown. Ohio. I gave the officer my correct address at the
time. 4991 A Continental Drive. Salem. OH 44460. The officer

since approximately March of 1998. when I moved back to Oregon,

In 1999, my wife, Karen Cappy, was stopped for a traffic
infraction in Beaverton. Oregon. I was a passenger. The officer
checked my warrant status, noted that the warrants were old, and
took no further action. This ticket was either never filed or
dismissed, and I have not been able to find any record of it.

On September 1, 2000. I obtained an Oregon ID card from DMV. It
listed my residential address at the time, 16989 N.W. Nichols
Lane, Forest Grove. OR 97116. I updated the address on my ID card
in 2001 to 20235 S.W. Angie Lane, Beaverton, OR 97007, which was
my office address at the time. I could have been easily located
at this address. Because the type of contract work that I do is
security sensitive, supervisors suggest that discrepancies
between addresses on airline tickets and identification be
eliminated if possible. My airline tickets were issued with my
office address, and I changed my ID address to conform to the
addresses on my airline tickets. Subsequently, I lost my Oregon
ID card in China and never replaced it. It expired in 2004.

My Daughter Madison was born February 13, 2000 with biliary
atresia, a rare liver disease. The disease causes cirrhosis and
jaundice. She will eventually need a liver transplant. Although
my wife and I have since learned to live with our daughter’s
condition, in 2000 our coping abilities were stretched to their
limits. Many of her medical expenses around the time of her birth
were not covered fully by my insurance plan. Since then, there
have been other medical expenses that we have had to meet
ourselves.

On May 1, 2001, I applied in person and received my original
birth certificate from the state of Oregon administrative office
located at 990 Lloyd Center, Portland, OR 97232. I needed the

forms that I was required to complete.

After the RedcellX kerfuffle culminated in a BOLI decision against him (and several finding against him in small claims court) Troy Melquist continued his scams under the name of “Al Melquist”.  Recently he surfaced again in Las Vegas, meaning it’s now time to resurrect the old site.
